In my opinion, every DB entry must have a timestamp (maybe it already has), and if the XMP file is newer, the image is automatically re-imported. - Comparing timestamps is extremely fast compared with almost all other operations DT has to do. They are reliable, too (people are backuping and rsyncing with them everywhere). - People expect that moving a file together with its sidecar file "just works". - Synchronisation between many computers becomes easier. - Restoring from backups is easier. "easier" means here not only a matter of convenience but also a matter of avoiding data loss!
