...and nobody is trying to take that away from you. It just isn't a 
consideration for some people; selling giant prints is a completely alien 
concept to me... and you can create a small jpg from anything. :)

This, again, is a subjective thing. They're an order of magnitude larger than 
my final JPEGs in my case, and this is a consideration for me, while I can 
easily see how it isn't for other people who's priorities are different. These 
days there is a large grey area between serious, professional photographers who 
would never part with their RAWs and people who don't understand what a RAW 
format is, and cameras are being produced for this market. I personally think 
this is a good thing. But it makes for a wide variety of use cases.

I completely agree with you here - it's one of the primary motivations for me 
to make darktable work for my use case, rather than use other RAW developing 
options. But I can also understand how someone else's way of doing things might 
make this an unimportant feature. Not everyone processes large numbers of 
similar pictures.

All of which is to say: there is diversity in what people are trying to do.
