Gutenprint should actually be able to drive that printer just fine. I use it with the 2880 without issues. You will need to profile the paper for it though, using something like a ColorMunki, or the colors will be screwed up. Photoprint+argyllcms+gutenprint should provide you with a very workable workflow for that printer. There may also be good graphical frontend for argyllcms in gnome-color-manager but I've never tried that.
