As you found out, the quality is not only dependent on the printer +
paper but also with the driver version as I said in the page I have
quoted previously (have you read
http://pobry.blogspot.fr/2013/04/printing-from-gnulinux-using-darktable.html ?).

So you cannot use a random ICC profile but one that has been
specifically made for the software/driver used (turboprint for example).
I myself use gutenprint and have high quality results (almost
indistinguishable from my Lr prints) using my own ICC profile.

Note that the software used must apply ZERO correction and DISABLE the
printer profile.

I understand what you are going through... I've been there, but I can
tell you that if you follow closely what I have written in the page
quoted above you ought to have high quality printing on GNU/Linux.

Also, look at the following page to create a ICC profile for your
printer/paper/driver:
http://pobry.blogspot.fr/2013/06/creating-icc-profile-on-gnulinux.html

If you happen to use an Epson 3880 + Epson Luster Photo Paper +
Gutenprint I can share an ICC profile.
