I've never understood this :) Why do you want to backup pictures at this
stage? After downloading you'll probably delete 50% of them (depending
on you kind of pictures, could be less or more)... So why backup
pictures so early?

On my side I do the following:

0. I import the pictures from my memory card to my local drive

1. I do a first selection, removing bad pictures, tagging...

2. I do the development while the image are still on my local drive

3. I *move* all the pictures to my external drive which is RAID   

4. I have setup and automated backup every night to copy the pictures on
a cloud (copy from the RAID drive).

So on step 4, I do copy *only* the retained pictures and do backup
the .xmp too.
