Simple answer:
Because Nikon Software I used before also has this same feature - and I
ignored it. :-(

Full answer:
This (ignoring of the feature) resulted in the loss of three pictures
(two of them important for me) out of around 3000 in a later stage of
the workflow while transferring the batch of files to my "server"
desktop machine over wired LAN. I obviously had bit errors in the
transfer so the backup created on the "server" machine also was useless.

Conclusions:
I want to create a backup _before_ editing because this lets me know if
the first transfer (Camera card to Computer) is ok - darktable won't
recognize faulty files. In this case I can come back on the memory card
and try again. Once on the computer and checked and modified I checksum
all RAWs prior to other transfers, e. g. to the "server" machine.
Now I can check any transfer automatically and also can check if storage
device is still working ok - otherwise come back on the backup and
replace the faulty storage device.
This - I hope - will give me maximum of security with amateur means.

Summary:
There are three places of RAW pictures - for example on travel:
- Memory card,
- Working directory on Laptop,
- Simultanous backup while download
when coming home:
- Working directory on Desktop PC as copy from Laptop verified by checksum
- Working directory on Laptop,
- still present: Simultanous backup from first memory card download
=> Memory card will be erased,
later in the workflow:
- "server" computer as copy from Desktop PC verified by checksum
- backup on external medium as copy from Desktop PC verified by checksum
- still present: Simultanous backup from first memory card download
