I don’t know what you mean by a non-commercial card, but I’m running Open CL
for dt just fine on a radeon 6850
My recommendation is to look at phoronix or elsewhere that provide Linux OpenCL
benchmarks and check just how good whatever card you are considering is for
OpenCL. If it doesn’t run at all you have your answer ...

Subject: [Darktable-users] Using Radeon GPU
I would like to use Darktable to convert NEF images to TIF images and take
advantage of openCL. The problem I'm running into and its mostly my fault is I
don't know if image conversion in this actually leverages openCL or not. I
found that the nvidia support is only for the commercial cards as far as driver
support is concerned. Will I be able to use OpenCL on a non-commercial radeon
card such as an R9-280?
