Hello DT users,

since my current monitor is past the end of its useful lifespan (it
has developed a yellowish color cast in the middle of the screen) I'm
about to buy a new one. And having taken on raw-processing a bit more
seriously, it seems logical to me to get something that can be
calibrated, which would be a first-time experience for me.

Being an open-source (FOSS, that is) apologist, and a Linux-only user,
I'm especially interested in achieving an open-source only workflow,
or at least to the extent possible.

So I figured that the Darktable community might have a lot of
knowledge and experience about what hardware goes well with FOSS, and
what to better not buy.

Could you please give me some feedback on the the experience you've
had, especially with an open-source perspective?

  * What monitor do you use?

  * What graphics card do you use, and do you use it with a FOSS
graphics driver? AFAIK OpenCL pretty much binds me to a
    proprietary driver — right?

  * What colorimeter/photometer do you use? And how does it play with
    Linux?

  * Would you buy them again? If not, then why, and what would you go
    for instead?

  * Do you have to use non-FOSS software in certain aspects of your
workflow? (Maybe MS-Windows on a VirtualBox to get the ICC
    profile from the calibration tool?)

Currently I'm thinking about getting Eizo's CS240, and borrow a
colorimeter before buying one. I have no clue about what graphics
card to get. I'm not interested in playing games or watching movies.
Money-wise I'd like to stay below 1000€ for the monitor, and rather
spend the bucks on a lens, but that's debatable...

Don't get me wrong, I can compromise and use a closed-source graphics
driver. But if there's a choice, I'd rather pay a little more for the
benefit of manufacturers collaborating with FOSS.

Thanks for your Feedback!
Stefan
