For me it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't work. It seems to depend on what lens is attached and in what mode the camera is. Auto focus settings of the lens can influence it, too. Maybe, it would need a bit of work as the focussing is done by the live view module which doesn't get the mouse events from the central widget, but it's doable. For the time being you could assign keyboard shortcuts for focussing. I use left/right arrow as those are the key presses my wireless presenter (meant for Powerpoint slideshows) is sending.
