thanks. This brings me a step closer.

# gphoto2 --set-config /main/actions/manualfocusdrive=2
# gphoto2 --set-config /main/actions/manualfocusdrive=2

both drive the lens focus, but only if I switched the camera to live 
view before.

Focusing still doesn't work from darktable.
I tried to options:

1. use camera live view and *no* live view in darktable -- focusing from 
darktable doesn't work

2. use dt live view which shows correctly the camera live view image but 
then the camera's live view is turned off. Focusing doesn't work either 
in this case.

Any ideas?
