I'm sorry, I had read your original email and diagnosed it to be this

For a jpg that's perfectly safe but you don't want to do that to a raw
file (I know I keep harping about this :). In those cases you'd want
to do a similar thing (I think the tag name would be slightly
different) but to the equivalent .xmp file. Unfortunately we're
currently not reading that from xmps, it's something we need to rework
in the future when we review how we do metadata.
