I think some scanners have some nifty dust removal methods with IR or
something of the sort. How are you doing color correction? Does the
scanner itself have some good defaults? I've scanned film in the past
and by far the hardest thing was getting the colors right. That was
with negatives though which are naturally much harder to get right.

There was recently a scanner file added to rawsamples.ch:

http://rawsamples.ch/raws/nikon/SCANNER_NIKON_LS5000.DNG

when I first looked at it it was not working properly and I just
assumed it was a different format. As it turns out it was this bug,
now fixed, that also affected some lightroom generated DNG panoramas:

http://redmine.darktable.org/issues/10775

So 2.0rc4 when it's released should support the 4000 as well if the
format is the same. It shouldn't really be any different than the
16bit TIFF though as the DNGs these scanners generate are just normal
RGB images not bayer. But maybe there's some difference in the
processing or in the metadata they add that makes them work better in
darktable than the TIFF. I doubt it though.

If you decide to test it please submit one of those DNGs to
rawsamples.ch so there's a file for us to test against in the future.
Something colorful and well exposed is nice (both to look at when
testing and to make testing easier).

Cheers,

Pedro
