Hello Brendan,

Great to hear from you!

And you solved the problem!  Yes, I simply forgot to remove the formula from the field before changing the format to ::J.

I haven't built any new DP applications in several years (and my DP skills are obviously rusty).
However, I AM selling my library automation application (built in 1999 in DP) at the rate of about one or two per month off my web site.

Last week, a customer found a bug in a panel that apparently no one else was using (to keep track of library equipment).  I had employed Ralph's recursive link in that panel to increment the ID # - but for some reason it wasn't working.   I was very busy at the time and I quickly changed this to a ::J field (haste makes waste!) and then quickly sent it back to the customer (without testing it).  The customer on Friday let me know that it still wasn't working.

Now that I removed the formula from the field - based on your suggestion - it's working fine.

Incidentally, one of my goals in life is to master Ralph's recursive link incrementation scheme and implement it throughout the application!

Best regards,

Larry

Hi Larry,

Long time no speak.  Hope you're well and glad to see you're still
using DP.

I have to confess that, in the twenty or so years I've been using
DP, I've never used a ::J field, always having used ::I.  I actually had
to take a look in Help to find out the difference.  Having done that,
your question does seem to make some sense.  ::J sets the field to
increment at create, whereas ::I sets it to increment at save.

So, if you have used a ::J field and have not removed the formula
which was originally there, then the field will increment when the
record is created, but will presumably then be recalculated by the
formula.  This will effectively remove the auto-increment you are
seeking.  Of course, if the formula uses the value in the field then
that value will affect the calculated value.

If you have left the formula there, try removing it, or just setting
the field to not calculate at all.

   Hope this makes some sense.

      Cheers,

         Brendan.
