Hi Brian--

I thought everyone had Adobe reader for PDF files (free download and most
programs install it)?. Are we talking about the same PrimoPDF? They sell
some other programs but never investigated them as PrimoPDF is all I needed
as a quick "convert to PDF" program (it installs as if it were an additional
windows printer). It's seems to be quicker than the standard Adobe Reader
which has turned into a massive program that's become slow over the years.

Today, I successfully printed from DP to DPspool and then right into PDF
file using Adobe Acrobat 8.0 professional (which I got as a Christmas
gift) -- which installs as a windows printer that converts everything into
PDF files just like PrimoPDF (except it costs like $150 ). Also, it worked
pretty quickly as opposed to Adobe Reader. PrimoPDF ought to work just as
well, I meant to use it this year but then I got the gift at Christmas. I
set Adobe 8.0 as the default printer in the settings and all reports were
turned into PDF files that were immediately displayed. After that, I could
email, print, or store as desired. I think DP & DPspool can specify the PDF
converter as another printer, I haven't played with that yet.

My next project is scanning all these terrible forms I have to fill out for
patients directly into PDF documents, then use Adobe 8.0 to create forms,
then have DP fill them out with some sort of export/merge.

Also, I was able to install DPx onto Vista today and printed from DPspool
right onto a USB connected printer -- I wasn't sure if using a USB printer
was possible on DP! Admittedly I'm a little late in making these
conversions as I've been so tied up with work at the clinic.

Until July last year, I was still entirely in DOS (18 years of it using DP
patient database with 40,000 pts on it using a 1995 Compaq Aero 486sx
notebook computer with a whopping 12mb RAM and 2gb HDD) with a separate
computer for Windows.

Happy new year,
Jon

  Hi Jon,

As an aside the PrimoOnline is pretty neat.... I occasionally get some of
the file types that it supports, but do not have programs to display them in
or print them from, so an online converter like that can come in pretty
handy in an emergency...

  Bye
  Brian

    Hi fellow geniuses--

Hope I'm not speaking out of turn! I've been using Primo PDF for a few
years and works great, you set it up as a printer in Windows and it
automatically converts what you send to it into a PDF file. Works very fast
and I've never had a problem with it.
Anyway,You'd have to get DPspool to send it to this printer somehow,
I've never tried it but at least it's free (this program has a pretty good
reputation with everyone I've talked to).

    Here's the free download:

It's pretty cool, no advertising screen splash annoyances.

      Hello Don,

Sounds like what you need is a utility that enables your db to create
a .pdf file. Adobe might have some solutions for you.

The company where I am currently temping – Mighty Leaf Tea – uses an
app created by Sage Software found at http://sagesoftware.com/ that enables
an option to deliver .pdf files through the print menu. We use this for our
International invoicing. Avenue to explore? …

BTW … thought about you while watching the Steelers/Jaguars game.

      All the best,

      Tony

For many years I've run a report out of DP that I print using a very
old DOS utility called 4Print. Basically 4Print shrinks the text to print
two, three or four "regular" pages on a single page. This is how I produced
my political walk lists. Back in '93 the guy who wrote it actually added an
optional function just for my use. The program has been invaluable.

Today I am trying to create a print file from this program and create
a .pdf file. I am able to "print" to a filename and when I print that file
name from the DOS line it prints in the format I want it in. So far, so
good. Now my task is to figure out how to "print" that file into a .pdf
format. Does anyone have a clue?

I figured that I'd ask here before venturing off on any wild tangents.

      Don
