As I recall, there are two primary ways to make dp readonly.

First, you can define a readonly password for the database and enter using that
password

Second, you can create a menu, and use password protection on the menu items.
Both are covered in Ralph Alvy's book

Sounds like a good recipe to get started and will be in touch if I get stuck,

Thanks Bruce,

Michael

Yes, Michael, I'd be delighted. And thanks to both you and Dave for the
experience report: I'll likely go out and get a tablet and set this up because
I like to have DP handy

Using a web page designer is a great way to get it going (that's how Tony and I
got started on Know & Enjoy Mexico, from his design)

  1. get a web page design you like with some sample repeating data
  2. right click on it and "View Source"
  3. eyeball it to divide it into First Page Header, repeating Report Body,
and Final Footer sections
  4. copy paste the FPH and FF into those sections of a DP report, also one
representative RB piece
  5. replace each sample data item in RB with a (F4) picked database field
  6. run the report, open output file in browser and see if you've got it
right; if not debug/fix/repeat

This annotated screenshot at https://b1conrad.github.io/dp-html/ReverseEng.png

shows step 3 of this process for the sample. For a complicated layout, you
might need to printout the page source and mark it up with pencils and
highlighters etc. Someone showed this process at the conference in 2004 so it
you have the videos... You'll need to repeat the process so you have a page for
each panel you need, etc. Have fun, when you get the time! And shout out if you
get stuck

Best wishes,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Although I am using the DOSBox Turbo and Hacker's Keyboard option to view my DP
database on my phone, I have had a play with your demos and can see that it
might, in the long run, be a better option.

I have an old version of Serif WebPlus(X6) so will, when I have some spare time
(!), explore further and get back to you if I get stuck if that is OK with you.

Thanks again.

Best wishes,

Michael

Dave, that does sound promising. Has anyone done this?

Michael, here is a very brief demo to let you see what is involved in using DP
to generate HTML pages https://b1conrad.github.io/dp-html/ . This shows how to
produce a very bare-bones page that contains the data from one panel, with one
paragraph per record. Just looked at the result on my phone and it's readable (
https://b1conrad.github.io/dp-html/DEMO.HTM ) although not at all pretty.

If this is the kind of thing you need, I'll be happy to be your coach and
mentor as you go through the learning curve.

Best wishes,
Bruce

Thank you Dave that looks a promising idea, have you used it for DataPerfect?.

Hi Michael,

You could always install DOSBox Turbo and Hacker's Keyboard and run DP directly
on Android. :)

Thanks Bruce,

I'm not sure I would know how to do this but must first think carefully about
which data I need to access and how - directly, via links or both.

I would only need to browse the data and not update anything on the phone but
would like to do look-ups, or something similar, from more than one field.

Best wishes,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Good to hear from you again. This is what I would do, assuming by "access" you
mean read-only on the Android, with infrequent updates.

Write a report in the database to produce an HTML presentation, which would
likely consist of many web pages, one per venue perhaps, and also a "home" page
with links to the various venue pages.

If this overall scenario works in your case, I can help you flesh out the
process (as there is a missing link or two).

Best wishes,
Bruce

I have a DP database consisting of three panels: Venue/date, Titles & Sales.

Sales is linked to Venue/Date by venue & date and to Titles by a reference
number.

I sometimes need to access this information on my somewhat aged smartphone
while out & about at craft fairs but know nothing of Android databases.

Failing an Android version of DataPerfect, can anyone suggest a suitable
database please.

Thanks,

Michael
