Perl 5.8.1 is a major release of perl. A summary of the changes can

It is important for the perl community as a whole that this release
candidate is as widely tested as possible so problems can be resolved
before the final release.

p.s. Changes that have some specific relationship to the DBI include:
- greatly improved UFT8 support (5.8.1 is strongly recommended
for anyone working with UFT8),
- old style ('unsafe' but immediate) signal handling for
timeouts etc is available again
