Wild guess:

Your server rebooted/imapd crashed wihtout cleaning up the .pid files. At next startup it notices that the .pid files still exists and overwrites them.

I get this from stopping/restarting postfix/dbmail..
When I stop dbmail, there's no pid file ine the directory specified.

???
