A 6GB attachment is *totally* unrealistic for *any* email system to be expected to handle.
Lets's save this message, we'll speak about it again in 10 years... Do you think you say the same again by then?
I think its entirely probably that email as we know it will no longer exist by then... ;)
Yes, for the moment it's a bit big, but then again - why? We've set a single mail size limit of 100MB now, bigger than any other ISP I know. I'd like to have a 10GB limit, and I don't see a problem with that.
Most people who run mail servers do - especially high volume servers. Accepting and processing such huge messages in any real volume would completely kill your server, which is precisely *why* most admins put limits on message sizes.
Currently for big files you must upload them on a website, send a link, and then hopefully delete it once the customer got it.
So? This is only a little bit harder than sending an email anyway, and uses protocols designed for transferring large files...
We have customers making pictures for ads, they currently need such a system to send their people the graphics. It would be much easier to send it directly.
Easier is not always better... the biggest problem you'll always have is convincing the major players that host and have to process all of the email to add enough processing power to be able to handle processing such messages in any kind of volume.
First - determine what the maximum *realistic* size of a message that DBMail can handle, based on certain cofigurations (ie, PostgreSQL may be able to handle larger messages than MySQL, or vice-versa)... then *hard-code* in that max size, and make a configuration parameter available that admins can set to make their max size *lower*, but not *larger*.
Does anybody know of a size that can't be handled? At least 100MB/mail is no problem here.
The problem is not how much it costs to process a single message/file - but how much it costs to be able to process *lots* of such messages at the same time.
