I finally found the clean solution here and will apply to the upcoming 2.2.2.

does restarting hal 0.5.11-rc1-1 changes something?
is the nut addon still loaded?

Note that I've just tested a 0.5.11-rc2 (the one on an ubuntu hardy
box nearby) and it's still working fine...
