With testing you could use unstable as your staging area in which case this would degenerate into solution one. Considering unstable is just that (ie unstable) and I suspect GNOME2 problems will be resolved by the time sarge freezes that sounds like a good approach to me. Related question though: do you expect GNOME1 to still see active use and maintenance in the future, or do you expect GNOME 1 to be abandoned?
