What are the arguments from the upstream people? >From your description it might make sense to consider GNOME 2 a completely different environment instead of an upgrade from GNOME 1: personal configuration has to be redone, applications have changed, options have disappears, etc. In that case it would make sense to keep both GNOME 1 and GNOME 2 environments. However it sounds like GNOME 1 is de facto abandoned, so it makes sense to no longer include it in the next major Debian release.
