Just to check: it's possible to have both a GNOME 1 and 2 configuration, and most users will not have a GNOME 2 one ? In which case automatically generating one (possibly after asking the sysadmin whether this is a good idea) by converting the GNOME 1 config would seem quite sensible. Ian.
