Lots of nastiness: users might currently be logged in and suddenly have files changing underneath them. NFS /home will also break things. We had the same problem with fvwm/fvwm2 a couple of years ago and ended up with the postinst offering to try and convert the config for all users but also offering a commandline tool users could use to update their config.
