Are you typing this at in X? If you are not in X and try to run an application that requires it you will get an error like that. To set your default window manager you need to edit ~/.xinitrc (or ~/.xsession if you use XDM) the last line should be: exec wmaker Checkout XWindow-User-HOWTO.
