Back in a previous thread Gene was saying that it's only evident when some GUI app brings up a file requester to load or save something so that was my thought too. In particular that it might be doing some kind of failed network activity looking for network shares or something. The thing is, we've also seen Gene's computers with strange things like syntax errors in /etc/nsswitch.conf and /etc/hosts, avahi bits manually rm'd, resolv.conf whacked with chattr +i and so on, so it's also no surprise to me that this is difficult to debug.
