Dear Max, Dear all: using these two variants
[*] Debian desktop environment [*] ... GNOME [*] Debian desktop environment [] ... GNOME works completely fine and you will end up with a fully featured GNOME desktop environment :) However, in this case [] Debian desktop environment [*] ... GNOME installation completely fails X(. I just tested with a recent Debian netinst 13.1.0 iso myself. It's seldom a good idea to deselect/uncheck essential/standard installation tasks. You will end up in a uncomfortable situation. My reading of the initial question is if the following variants in installer result in some difference for installed system (unsure concerning precise labels) - [X] Debian desktop - [ ] GNOME - ... (others are not checked) vs. - [ ] Debian desktop - [X] GNONE - ... Installer may execute some additional commands (for user convenience). Perhaps instead of - [X] Debian desktop - [ ] GNOME - [X] KDE I used - [X] Debian desktop - [ ] GNOME - [ ] KDE expecting to get some common packages (e.g. desktop-file-utils), branding like wallpapers, etc., expecting no DE packages. I got GNOME despite it was unchecked. Installing new instances is not regular activity for me. Maybe next time I will try parent + some non GNOME checkbox to be sure. From my point of view the menu should be without the parent checkbox: - Desktop environment - [X] GNOME (recommended) - [ ] KDE - ...
