From my past experience with KDE tools, once Akonadi fails it would be
very hard to try to rescue it. Have you tried purging everything and
reinstalling them?

Has anybody here had trouble making kmail work on Trixie?
ATM, I don't want to try to give the details of what I've tried
(partly because I don't remember them, have a headache, and not really
interested in spending much time troubleshooting).
I recently installed Trixie (on a new to me machine, with plenty of
CPU power and RAM (64 GB)). It's the first new version of Debian I've
installed since Jessie.
I expected / hoped to continue to use kmail as my email client, and
hoped it would work right out of the box. After installation, it can
receive emails but cannot send them (well, I'll modify that --
initially it could not send emails, then I managed to get it to send
one email (somehow, don't remember what I did -- did not touch
akonadi), and now, again, I can't send emails.
Aside: I then tried to install Balsa (with a simple apt-get install
balsa (or whatever the package name is)( and that failed for some
reason -- don't recall and didn't record the error message.
Aside: I fetch mails with pop3 and prefer to have them stored in mbox
files. On an interim basis I've installed Thunderbird and it works sor
sending and receiving.
Atm, I'm not interested in (and am getting too old for) detailed
troubleshooting -- I just wonder if anyone else has had a similar
problem and maybe found a simple fix.
(Just in case you're wondering, this email is being sent from kmail on
my old faithful Wheezy machine.)
