There is an autodetect button in the Sending settings. But for example
my ISP apparently supports both 465 and 587 since I had 465 in
Thunderbird (other computer) but kmail autodetected 587.

I don't think I've ever needed to wipe anything from Akonadi but again,
not a heavy user of kmail or Akonadi. I do remember a time years (maybe
over a decade) ago when it was unable to deal with a computer sleeping,
I had to restart the akonadi daemons by hand.
