They are incompatible. As noted in the thread on debian-devel [1], even debian's own servers won't run debian any more, because they require non-debian firmware. Debian won't run on a large fraction of hardware any more. (If a binary blob turns a debian kernel into a non-debian kernel, then that same blob turns a computer running the debian OS into a computer not running debian). To restate the obvious: After the transition a lot of current debian users won't be using debian anymore. (In all likelihood including most DDs.)
