I have a quick question. We have just installed a backup relay to capture
all incoming emails in the event our mail server goes down.
That's good.

I have basically made the 2 systems the same priority on the DNS so I can
capture some traffic to the backup relay for data.
You might want to re-think this.

If both systems have the same priority, then half your mail will go to the backup mailserver, and half to the primary mailserver. That's not a normal setup.

If you want the backup mailserver to see all the mail for some reason, it should be set up as a gateway -- it should be listed in the MX records, but the primary shouldn't.

If you want it to be a standard backup mailserver, you'll want to have it have a lower priority. That way, mail will go to the primary unless it is down (in which case the backup kicks in).

All emails are scanned and filtered on the backup relay, as expected. But!!
As the email is fowarded to the main email server, the email server does not
scan the relayed mail again in greater detail, instead i get a message
"E-mail whitelisted - automatically passing all spam tests [@domain.edu]"

Our mail relay is called MGateway.domain.edu and in our global.cfg I have
WHITELIST FROM @Domain.edu.

Any hints as to where MGateway.domain.edu is considered okay for processing
in Junkmail?

That's because the "WHITELIST FROM" will whitelist based on the return address of the E-mail. So if someone sends an E-mail from "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", then it will be whitelisted when it reached the primary server. The name of the gateway server won't be used in determining whether or not to whitelist the E-mail (unless you whitelist its IP address, which would end up whitelisting all E-mail that came through the gateway).
