I have checked Free Pascal out, as well as SharpDev and some others.
But I think the problem facing us all is much bigger than just needing to
write in Pascal. To be sure I consider it to be important enough to have
looked at Chrome deeper than any other solution, but it's Chrome's ability
to provide fully compliant .Net code using Pascal as the front end language
that is even more important than simply being able to continue writing in
Pascal alone!
One of the biggest problems facing IDE's like FreePascal is
Borland's unwillingness to provide good, current, open information. This
has spelt the demise of other 3rd party tools before, and unless they do no
one will ever be able to optimize a VCL for anything BUT Delphi!
Chrome on the other hand doesn't have to worry about Borland because
Pascal itself isn't owned by anyone. All they've done is equip the VS IDE
to compile Pascal into .NET compliant code, and that means that everything
enabled for .NET in VS is available to writers of Pascal. And they didn't
just stop there either, because on top of that they've added new features to
Pascal that are really cool and very productive in nature!
I'd never even looked at a RemObjects before Chrome, but since then
I've come to realize just how smart these guys are! It takes a lot more
than intelligence to perceive the obvious and make it a part of a solution.
It takes good common sense and the ability to look far beyond what others
have already accomplished. And the people at RemObjects have succeeded in
this to a great degree! If I do make the final decision to move away from
Delphi, Chrome is holding the top spot among all the alternatives I can
choose from. It's this kind of innovation that made Delphi what it once
was. It's a terrible shame that they have saddled themselves with the kind
of neo-selfish management that now rules them!

Hello Robert,
Depend on what you need, you can also give Free Pascal a try.
It has a few free IDEs available, among which Lazarus looks like
Delphi so much :) I never seriously used it but I did compile
an empty form and it compiled and ran fine :)
