The BDE is another unnecessary layer in some cases. The Access native driver
was hugely buggy when it first came out and that put me off it for life.
ODBC was messy to set up and also had serious limitations. While Titan and
so on offer workable solutions they are very expensive. The ADO interface is
easy to implement and consequently (except for Borland) the components are
cheaper and the great advantage offered is that it is a Microsoft technology
and should work well with other MS products.
Note I am not referring to redistributable products but in-house
applications. The client group I work with are typically eligible for
academic pricing on MS stuff. Access has its shortcomings but the basic
product comes with replication capabilities freeing me of another task that
would have to be implemented in software. So there is something to be said
for it.
