Its a nice sunny Friday so I don't mind at all, but I normally try to
resist getting too off-topic on the main DUG list.

Eeek - I remember doing Vax assembler at varsity and I can't say I got a
lot out of it. Even on the embedded 68K machines we build here, the
assembler is pretty much gone and even the C is is danger of being
thrown out & replaced with Java running on a embedded VM.
Understanding the underlying mechanism of the machine can lead to more
efficient code but might get in the way of thinking of higher level
objects - ie Accounts, Door frames, Smartcards or whatever else you are
programming.
Mind you, my pet hate is seeing new programmers who have never used a
command line before - many of them just don't understand the truth &
beauty of a good Unix shell <g>
