Na...

I doubt that little IB is a target for MS marketing strategy. Anyway, deep
down in the heart of matters SQL Server is still just crappy old Sybase DB
Lib with heeps of glossy bloat BS over the top. If you want a cool small SQL
database, then IB is where its at. Free doesnt mean good. Underneath every
thing there is still the MAJOR problem with SQL Server that to get a
consistent view of the data, readers block writers. IB dosn't. It can be
free, but until this problem is dealt with properly, it doesn't rate as a
database at all. What about Identities versus generators? The MS Identites
are just plain useless. You have to select back the ID after every Query. IB
Generators are nice.

You can go over to where its free, but I have a fair investment in IB in
terms of a good thin application archetecture, happy clients, and I get to
sleep at night.

Me, I am happy to pay for IB if it keeps the IB development rolling along.

Try joining the IB List for a few weeks, and tell me if MS can compete with
that depth of technical knowledge, understanding, and support. MS is poretty
good at putting on flashy marketing days where you hear what they want you
to hear. The IB list at mers is pretty earthy.

Its pointless you arguing for Inprise to give IB away for free. Its
impossible. Are you prepared to give yourself away for free? If you really
want to see IB survive, and this incredibly unethical marketing strategy of
MS fail, then just respect IB for the technical advantages it has, pass the
word on to your customers, and ignore MS crap.

I mean, if VB was free (and it pretty well is) would you change your whole
tech development over to VB on that basis?

The only thing I would say to IB is, help us spread the good word. I get
pretty sick of paying full retail price for Inprise products. There is
absolutely NO $ incentive for me to ever use any Inprise product.

Nevertheless, here is why I use IB, and no other DB.

1. Deploy it and forget it.
2. Read consistency.
3. No DBA overhead.
4. Small footprint.
5. SIMPLE to install.
6. Easy to use API for development.
7. Extensibility through UDF.
8. Multi Platform. What do you do with MS when you run ito a SUN or HPUIX
platform. Try telling the customer they have to go buy a big grunty NT box
when the corporate poclicy says SUN for DB.
9. Technically IB has been great for me. No problems. Dont need to spend
half my life cruising the web looking for patches and fixes.

IB Loyalist.

Subject: [DUG]: Save IB

I think if Inprise/Borland immediately does not come up with the similar to
MS plan, they may say goodbye to IB.
Free IB re-distributable for Borand developers with the same up to 5 users
license would be the right answer and it must be quick.

I'd suggest local Borland to contact USA Borland and tell them that people
may start jumping off IB train quicker they one may think.
IB is better in may areas but it is far from being clear winner. 5 free
users licenses for MSSQL is enough to make IB looser.

Oh, Microsoft, you've done it again! But this time it is not gonna make such
amount of noise as embedding IE into OS.
