GIF however can not be used to save more than 256 colours AFAIK - JPEG is
the only thing for photos because it can contain millions of colours.
Yes JPEG is a lossy compression format - otherwise it would not be possible
to make a JPEG image as small as it is. In fact you choose how much loss you
can put up with when you save your JPEG.
