D'Oh, yes, you're correct.

What I was trying to say was that (pre-Java) a lot of 
Unix dev. was completely done with gcc-debug (can't think of the
equivalent on PC, although I've heard VB started off pretty, well, 
basic). Now the common tools provide a 'complete' syntax-highlighting,
component-based, gui-based, trace-to-next-sourceline environment.

However, re-reading the original, I think (if I may be so bold) that
Neven was making a similar point : the modern tools increase 
productivity and thus lower the cost of software production. If 
this is the case, I would have to concede the point on both counts...

Also, I found this somewhere, which, I think is close to the point 
about the next dentistry software being written by dentists:

"I think what I mean is that I am not a programmer in the same way 
that an accountant who writes clever macros in Excel is not a 
programmer. Before Excel this person would have relied on a team of 
programmers to create a monolithic accounting system which did 
everything, and used a desktop calculator for local work."
