I can see your point but I don't think the analogy is currently a good one,
at least for small software houses like ours. I'm generalising but I would
suggest that on average electronics manufacturers are much larger than
software developers (ie it is difficult and unusual for 2 or 3 people to get
together, manufacture and release a new electronic device). I would also say
that electronics manufacters generally release far fewer versions of their
software than software developers. I'm talking about small software
developers here but I think it probably applies to even large software
developers. Look at the number of patches that Microsoft release - each of
these would need certification (not a problem with their budget but it makes
my point).

Of course this brings up an interesting question which gets to core of the
argument. "Should the software industry be more standardised like other
industries such as the Electronics industry?"

I believe this would make it much harder for small software developers and
may consequently reduce diversity and innovation. I also think there are
fundamental differences between the software industry and hardware
industries (such as electronics) which make it difficult to apply the same
rules/standards. However having said that I think it is inevitable that as
the software industry matures it will become more standardised and Palladium
could be a step along that road....

.... BUT, you can't honestly say that a company which has spent years honing
it's predatorial skills, buying out, swamping and otherwise crushing it's
opposition left, right and centre should be in charge of the equivelent of
the ISO standard for the Software Industry? God help us if that is the
case - 'cause no one else will be able to!

David.
