Title: Message
From the borland.public.delphi.netpreview Usenet newsgroup this morning...

Quoting John Kaster, Borland Developer Relations:

I just got done speaking to Simon Thornhill, and we are updating the
open letter and the Q&A regarding Octane.

There are 4 pieces of information I have been authorized to provide that
will also be in the updated documents:

1. Delphi 7 will be bundled with Octane

2. There will be an update to Delphi for Win32 after Octane ships

3. If you purchase software assurance for the Octane release of Delphi,
you will continue to receive updates to both the .NET and Win32 versions
of Delphi as Borland produces them. This applies as long as you are up
to date with your software assurance for Delphi. It may not apply if
your software assurance lapses

4. In addition to points 1 and 2 above being added to the Octane open
letter, the Octane Q&A will be updated to answer the questions Bob
Dawson posted in the netpreview newsgroup

For further details on these points, you will have to wait for the
updated Open Letter and Q&A

Cheers,

Conor

Ok, the understanding I have (based on what I managed to absorb at Richard's last presentation) is that there are two distinct products in the offing:

Delphi.Net
The long awaited .Net compiler for Delphi. I look forward to this because it will bring our code in line with the future and open up many possibilities (e.g. ASP.Net code talking directly to Delphi.Net code without the need for ugly COM in between).
Due to be released late November / early December this year.

Delphi 8
Win32 compiler for Delphi. Ho hum, yet another version of Delphi. Due to be released sometime next year. First or second quarter, I can't remember which. I can't say I was paying much attention at this point.

It seems that they had to choose between delaying everything another few quarters or finishing one of the above products off and leaving the other 'till later. They chose Delphi.Net and good on 'em I say :)

All that said, the software assurance deal that Borland have offered with Delphi 7 means that you should be able to get both Delphi 8 & Delphi.Net for free if you signed up with the software assurance. Note I say "should" it is all contingent on the lead times for the software of course.

Me? I didn't go for the software assurance, I am keen on just getting Delphi.Net and leaving it at that :)

I have been reading the borland open letter to the delphi community, and the very agitated comments posted on the article.

Im a little unclear as to what to expect with delphi 8.  Can someone clear some things up for me please.

In light of the fact that they are saying
Therefore, we have increased our focus on .NET technology in Octane, - the next Delphi release - to 100%. This is an adjustment to our previously published plan which had included an update to our Win32 Delphi technology in the Octane release.

i ask:
Will the win32 compiler still be in place?  Can i still use webbroker for further development of my apps if i upgrade?
Was snatching up that deal on Delphi Studio 7 with Upgrade advantage a waste of time and money?

in the comments i found:
Delphi for Win32 will continue to evolve as a product line in parallel with Delphi for .NET

does this mean we need to purchase two seperate products to develop in win32 and .net??????
