They do like to blame the rotten help on Microsoft, and I wouldn't
doubt they do have something to do with it, however, after I finished up my
last Delphi 2007...the one I mentioned a couple months ago...I again started
fooling around with VS w/Chrome for .NET 3.5., and I have to admit, except
for the learning curve, it's been a veritable joy to work with!
If I had to make a comparison between the two IDE's, I'd have to say
that Delphi still feels as if you're driving a kit car, ( You remember those
fancy looking fiberglass shells on top of a Volkswagen chassis they used to
sell back in the 60's and 70's ), compared to the VS Cadillac!
Everything works right out of the box the way it's supposed
to...including the help system...with VS and the new Chrome "JoyRide"
release, and does so smoothly, without any hitches or delays. D2007
although certainly the best IDE they've released in many years...since D7
anyway...has so many little annoyances that can make you pull your hair out
that sometimes I really believe what someone said in a movie recently...that
CodeGear is so busy rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic they don't even
know they're sinking!
In the last two years, I've watched as the number of Delphi-centric
programmers has gone down little by little, but this year, it's happening
twice as fast! Just look at the difference in posts on this and other
Delphi lists and forums. Microsoft is forcing us all into NET one way or
another, and what Godegear could and should be doing to turn the tide back
to Delphi for both Win32 and NET, they're not doing! Why should anyone wait
another six months or more to spend 400 to get an upgrade to the full Delphi
Pro IDE with NET compatibility that will by then be almost 2 years behind
the times, when they can purchase a VS w/Chrome fully NET compatible IDE for
only 200 right now!? Especially when they can also buy Hydra 3.0 for less
than Delphi as well and which allows you to mix Win32 and NET code in the
same project while you're learning NET!
If GodeGear doesn't drastically change it's support, marketing
strategy, and product stability really soon, it's going to be too late and
they won't have a customer base worth saving anymore! One other thing
too...Borland was at one time the leading Pascal company, but RemObjects is
killing them in that area as well by updating the language with every
release in some very remarkable ways. I haven't yet explored them all, but
those I have are really on the mark when it comes to productivity and ease
of use. The one and only problem I've encountered with this setup has been
the lack of example code and instructional tutorials on NET using Pascal.
It's all in C# or VB for NET. But this is slowly getting better as well!

What Help system? It's a joke compared to Delphi 5.
