Yeah, Steve's email outlines a typical NZ scenario for staff on salary. I used to work in an environment like that. The later you finished the more you are respected (never mind what your efficiency for the day was).
More than some companies are squeezing their staff to the max, looking at the hours you put in (important to finish late!) but seem blind for the quality etc of the end product and blind for the fact that they are actually creating demotivated staff. As most people know, working long hours usually means that the productivity drops significantly towards the last hours. Working overtime is therefore in general a very bad idea. It's much better working 8 hours a day (+/- half an hour) and start fresh and motivated the following day. If really needed, work long hours, but only for a few days, max a week. If your boss thinks you need to work more hours because of the work load and turns to be an ongoing thing, then there is clearly something seriously wrong with their management in combination with a lack of staff. And last but not least, a little reward so once and a while (a small token or taking staff for lunch, or send them home early) can do wonders, and makes everybody happy, creating a healthy company. But this isn't just a programmer issue. I remember working for a company in Auckland where I was expected to turn up for work at 7am every day and anyone who left the office before 5:30 was "suspect". I was regularly sent to Sydney where I had to be at the airport at 4am for a 7am flight (in those days where 3 hour checkins were required). Spend the entire day in an office or taxi in Sydney, then fly home (never ever put up for the night) where I wouod finally walk into my apartment just after midnight. I was still expected to give a debriefing to everyone at 7am. Yes, that was salary, no overtime, no bonuses, not even a Christmas gift, just salary - and although I had a training budget, I was never allowed to be away from work to attend any training. Training had to be done in my own time, but as I was regularly working through weekends for a customer presentation on Monday, I didn't have any of that stuff.
