Terminal server / Citrix over a VPN is the way to go. Slow over dial up but useable. If the connection drops, as it would when you use dial up, the session is maintained on reconnection. Remote printing is supported - you can map a local printer to the session.
The best thing about it is there is no redesign of existing software.
