I think this is software generated text messages to parents. If so, we don't 
use it at the moment.
It's a great idea (if you have a cellphone so it wouldn't help me).

Attendence checking (not counting calling the roll or phoning home but counting 
data collection,
data entry, printing out and posting in pigeonholes) probably takes 5-6 
man-hours per day here. I
wouldn't say truancy is a big issue but attendance is. Also, schools are pretty 
twitchy about young
kids not turning up without prior notice, like a phone call.
