well, as usual I don't really know. What we use is the library not the actual executable, but they would have to build that. Why they would be building evince at all I'm not at all clear, though - it's some window manager or desktop manager isn't it? I'm running this MATE thing but I have evince not atril installed (by Debian default). I see that atril is available on this distro and it has a libatrildev package, so with some re-naming in configure.ac what you propose could work.
