Well, the patch always expects a valley.

In general, yes. For very low coverage (e.g. <10), I guess it would be
possible for the number of errors to be so low that an initial valley
doesn't happen, but I expect that to be unusual and require a crazy high
accuracy of sequencing (e.g. Sanger sequencing if the start and end
rubbish were discarded).
