My conclusion is that no decision should be drawn based on guessing and personal preferences. It is not that simple with just age and expertise. For instance, even regular, highly experienced users of Writer that utilize keyboard shortcuts don't know the shortcut to show non-printing characters. Or do you? Treat this just as testable hypothesis.
