Hi Helen,

I'm CC'ing Robert (mray) the lead designer here, and posting this to the
design email list (as it's relevant to anyone else working on design
things). I stripped out unrelated bits from the quoted email thread.

There's a level to which we want to get launched and any work that gets
us there is welcome, but I certainly have the impression that in most
cases SVG raster files are really preferred, but not to the extent that
we would turn down contributed quality work just because it was done in
GIMP.

Yes, the design is a new direction, where my stick figures (no name,
just me drawing stick figures) will be deprecated and we're embracing
Mimi and Eunice all the way. That doesn't mean every illustration
necessarily *has* to have Mimi and Eunice, but that's indeed the design
goal, and no need to keep any stick figures.

I don't know how dogmatically we'll stick to the color scheme, but yes,
the new blue/green color scheme is the plan to have a consistent sort of
design. I think there could be cases where other colors fit in
appropriately, but that's a case-by-case basis.

Besides colors, there are some other aspects of design principles we're
formulating. We had this initial wireframe and scheme work done by some
students: https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/blog/new-design-1

But we're not using that exactly as is. Robert has been taking that as a
foundation to build what is the new design overall. I'm hoping he'll
soon post a new blog article about going from what the students did to
where we're at with his mock-up.

Please note that the static/img/infographic.png file is long outdated.
It's *almost* the same, but substantially different from the content we
actually have on https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/w/en/intro

The content there is *now* made of just several *separate* illustrations
along with HTML so that the text can actually be recognized, translated,
screen-read, and the page is responsive (looks different on mobile small
screens). The SVG source files for the current illustrations are in the
code for the site under static/img/intro/

So, indeed, we want to redo the whole intro page with the new design,
although we may also adjust the messaging as we go (such as using the
road emphasis I mentioned about toll-roads with billboards). But just
updating the current illustrations to use Mimi and Eunice and the new
color scheme and such could be a good iteration.

Lots of work here to do, and Robert has done a lot of thinking about how
to get everything just right. I love his work so far but also want to
see us iterate and sketch and put up some improvements as we go rather
than wait for perfection.

Hope that's all clear! I hope also that others on the design list will
see this and weigh in with thoughts, perhaps discuss collaborating on
specific steps.

Cheers,
Aaron
