Should we say:

=====
Click here to subscribe: <Link goes here>
Or, if that doesn't work, copy and paste the link into the Calendar>>Subscribe menu in iCal to subscribe.
=====

I realized it's sort of funny to first tell the user to copy and paste and then give them a link to click on ;o)

I personally feel if you can't have the auto launch work and make it do all the right things (ie. put the URL in the right place so the user can just click go) in all the applications 100% for all browsers/OS then it's best to let the user decide what they want to do and where to place it.

(I may be misunderstanding your point, so bear with me as I try to address it...) I think the thing is that the auto-launch isn't any work. It works just by virtue of making the URL something you can click on. So long as we provide the URL so they can copy and paste to subscribe, the user has recourse when/if the auto-launch fails.
