We have come up with a better solution to the Auto-Export problem.
Heikki has logged a bug to track this work: Bug# 11444 Redesign
export on quit

PROPOSAL
1. Remove the current dialog, and instead always auto-export when
user quits Chandler
2. If the export is taking too long (>15 seconds) pop up a dialog
that explains what's going on and asks the user if they would like to
skip auto-exporting.
This way, most users will just have auto-export work for them and
never have to know about it. Some users with slower machines and/or
lots of data will have the option to skip auto-export and be given
instructions on how to manually kick off exporting to upgrade.

Skip Auto-Export
-----
[Chandler Logo] Every time you quit, Chandler automatically exports
your data
in case you decide to upgrade to a
new version.
It's taking a long time to export
your data. Would you like to:
[Never Auto-Export] [Always Auto-Export]
[Skip Auto-Export]
-----
Note: You can always manually export your data in preparation for a
version
upgrade by going to the File>>Upgrade... menu.
===
Here's the proposal for the Upgrade menu item again:

Upgrade
-----
[Chandler Logo] Upgrading is now a simple 2-step process:
1. [Check] to see if there's
a new version of Chandler.
2. [Export] your data in
preparation for upgrade.
[Cancel]
