Very good question! Sadly, Sun has dropped support for further
development of MDR. There isn't even a JSR for a JMI to support XMI
2.0! No JMI for XMI 2.0 means no MDR for XMI 2.0, which results in no
MDR for UML 2.0.
I tried to raise the issue early this year at a Sun Conference with
James Gosling. I politely tried to point out how the neglect of MDR was
impacting so many open source tools, but he didn't seem to care.
I was careful to inform him that I had been a loyal user of NetBeans and
MDR for many years.
Moreover, he didn't seem very happy when I told him that IMHO the
neglect of MDR and JMI was creating yet another reason for tool
developers to integrate to the Eclipse platform, and not the NetBeans
platform. ;-)
FYI, I am still using NetBeans, but I will be switching to Eclipse soon.
I am really baffled by the way Sun has dropped the ball on this
one. :-\
As a result, EMF is the defacto standard for UML 2.0 models. I don't see
any viable option other than EMF for moving to UML 2.0, which is why so
many open source tools are migrating to EMF.

One possible explanation for Sun's behavior is that Sun is probably
going to open source a UML tool they acquired a few years ago. They had
been selling it as part of Java Enterprise Studio, but the technology is
being ported to Java and is in the process of being migrated into the
NetBeans project.
