I think 'politics' takes the fun out of OSS development, IF it exists. The best projects are those, where there are no PMC activity at all :o)

I think that a Merlin TLP has the opportunity to become a 'noise-free' environment, and the PMC's main role would be to prepare the reports for the Board.

While it might sound strange for some people, I completely share that sentiment. An functional project is the one that has barely no communication on the PMC.

The PMC chair in a functional project is just a social liaison.

The problem is that whether or not Merlin will be a functional project is yet to be seen.

Stephen McConnell resigned from the Avalon PMC and renounced to his commit priviledges on the Avalon project in the attempt to reduce the friction around Merlin.

This gesture was very appreciated and, indeed, reduced a lot of the social friction in Avalon.

At the same time, this *has not* cleared the concerns that a lot of people have (myself included) about his ability to play a constructive role in community building, but I personally don't want my doubts to hurt people that have nothing to do with it.

On my dealing with this the avalon situation, I realized that the Merlin community is a diverse one and there are various interests on the table that might keep everybody involved honest. I strongly hope this will create a safety net around the project (although, I have to say, I wouldn't bet my ass on it).

In fact, I think a lot of Merliners are trading a short-term benefit for a long-term pain, but this is just my personal opinion and I won't let this influence my vote as ASF director.

Personally, I would like the Merlin community to suggest his PMC chair to the board. The PMC will have the responsibility of keeping the "pax merlinea" and the chair should be ready to take action in case resolutions don't happen.

As for myself being the chair: I think the PMC chair should be somebody that has personal risks (technological and economical) at stake in case of community malfunction and I don't, nor plan to have any.
